4 July 2009.
Hon Christopher Finlayson,
Minister in Charge of Treaty Negotiations,
Parliament Buildings,
Wellington,
New Zealand.
Today you have created the biggest injustice ever by returning the Kaingaroa Forest to the Central North Island iwi without one document of evidence. See March 2009 "Investigate" magazine. "Treelords - show us the evidence?" by Ross Baker or the One New Zealand Foundation Inc website, www.onenzfoundation.co.nz .
Not only was this land purchased by the Crown on a willing seller/willing buyer basis for a very fair price, the actual forest was planted and belonged to all the people of New Zealand. The Central North Island iwi had no right to the trees, the carbon credits or the rentals, they belonged to the people.
Sir, what do you and your National Party colleagues hope to gain by returning assets to part-Maori that do not belong to them and never have?
What right has the "Government of the Day" to return assets belonging to the people of New Zealand - Crown assets?
I just hope for your sake the majority of people don't wake up to what you have done, because "when" they do, not "if" they do, God help you!
Remember, you can fool half the people half the time but not all the people all the time and time is running out fast - people are waking up!
Once again, congratulations, enjoy it while you can but remember, the loyal and honest old chief Peraniko and Captain Gilbert Mair will be watching you, as well as 4 million angry and frustrated people when they eventually wake up!
Ross Baker.
